Red Lipstick Revew: Bourjois Rouge Edition, in Shade 13

Bourjois Red Lips
Today, I picked up a couple of blazing reds to add to my lipstick collection. I’ve never been much of a lip person. My favourite look has always been dark eyes with neutral lip colour. But then I’m also an all-or-nothing kind of lass, so I’m always on the lookout for a statement shade or two. :)

Bourjois Rouge Edition Lipstick, Shade 13

The lipstick that I chose – the Rouge Edition Lipstick in Shade 13 – a rich, classic red.

Why it’s awesome.

The lipstick comes in a bold, swanky glossy black case with BOURJOIS embossed on one surface, which is a nice touch.

More importantly though, the rouge edition promises a lacquered, high-gloss look with extra hydration, and it certainly delivers. Upon application, it glided on with such ease, and my lips felt deliciously plumped and juicy afterwards.

Perhaps the biggest selling point – on medium fair skin like mine, it’s easy to turn a dirty olive with the wrong shade. But shade number 13 (coincidentally my favourite number) is the perfect combination of red with a tinge of blue, the hue to look out for if you’re lightly tanned like I am, and don’t want to look any tanner. Orange-reds bring out yellow undertones, so it’s something to avoid, unless you’re going for that sun-kissed look. This tone however, enhances the fairness of my skin, which I absolutely love. The best part is, there isn’t any shimmer in it, just pure, red goodness.

Why it’s blah.

The high amount of gloss, unfortunately, doesn’t provide enough traction on my lips to last. It’s made of a very thin, watery formula that smears a little too easily, even with a layer of red lip liner underneath, so there’s that blah-factor for me. An image of that dreaded, lipstick-stained-teeth look never fails to freak me out.

My verdict?

Get this if you’re prepared to spend time priming and layering your lips to ensure that the colour doesn’t run.

Matte lipstick will still be my number one go-to choice for a longer lasting wear. I love, love, love the red hue and that glossy look. I really do. But for a high-risk colour like red, it’s too easy to mess up, so I’m sticking to a longer lasting formula this time round.

What are your thoughts on red lipstick? I wanna know (:
